Skærisingen kendetegnes af et lille hoved, en ganske aflang kropsform samt en næsten ret sidelinje. Huden er ru i modsætning til rødtungens glatte overflade. Skærisingen kan veje op til godt 2 kg ved en længde af 60 cm. Den lever på dybt vand i den nordlige Nordsø, hvorfor den er en sjælden fangst i danske farvande.
